Jewish Pioneers of Victoria and Our 160-Year-Old Architectural Gem

Jewish Pioneers and Community Leaders 1859-1900

Learn from Amber Woods about the Jewish founders and pioneers who established Congregation Emanu-El and contributed to the business, political, and cultural life of a young and vibrant Victoria.

The Building of Congregation Emanu-El: Architecture as a Sacred and Social Jewish Narrative in Early Victoria

Building our synagogue in 1863 was a bold statement about the religious and social aspirations of the small Victoria Jewish community. Dr. Brian Pollick will talk about the features of Romanesque Revival architecture, with specific focus on our building, and why this style may have been chosen for the synagogue.

Congregation Emanu-El acknowledges that we are located on the traditional Coast Salish territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) peoples, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. We recognize our responsibility to care for these lands as First Nations have done for millennia. In accordance with the Jewish precept of teshuvah, or sacred reconciliation, we seek to repair the harms we settlers have done to the Indigenous peoples of these lands.

As Rabbi Nachman taught: “If you believe you can damage, believe you can repair.”
